She was a student before we were married and never closed the account before she left Japan. We have the account number but the bank she said she had the money in is not listed on the internet in Japan. Is there some way to find out if the bank she used was bought out by another bank and if so will her account still be there?

It depends what the banking laws are in Japan and how long the account has been dormant. Here in New Jersey I just received a notice from a bank in which I have a checking account that I have not used in ages to the effect that unless I re-activate the account they will start charging me a $12.95 per month dormant fee. Since I only have about $15 in the account it will disappear pretty fast. The same sort of thing might happen in Japan, depending on the banking practices there. If the account is dormant for any prolonged period of time it might be nibbled away by fees until it ceases to exist. There must be some sort of quasi-governmental banking regulatory agency in Japan, and if there is you might start there with whatever information you have. In any case, the sooner you act on it the better. It used to be that people robbed banks, but now it is the banks that rob people.

Your bank might be able to help you find out.
