My friend who lives in Tokyo has similar school hours to those in the United States, except for one day a week has school until 5:30 or 6pm.

I believe it depends on the level of school you're talking about, and for junior and senior high school it also depends on whether or not you count after-school club activities. At my junior high school, the first class starts at 8:50 and classes end at 4:00. However, most kids arrive at school by 8:15, and they stay until about 6:30 for club activities. Some clubs might also have morning practice, and that can start very early (I think one of my teachers mentioned arriving around 6:00am to open the school for morning club activities). Many of the kids will also have juku (cram school) for a few hours in the evening.

Typically, it's between 8:30am to 2:30pm. But it depends on each school, of course. Some of the kids stay at the school later for their clubs. Colleges have longer hours.
