Can you recommend English language schools in Japan

Can you recommend English language schools in Japan?
I'm meaning to teach English, not learn it. I've aleady applied to GEOS kids, but as of yet have had no reply. I have the necessary qualifications, so that's not an issue. thank you in advance for any answers.

There are many programs that place you in various schools in Japan so you can teach English. I am currently working here in Japan through the JET Program. I have been here for the last 3 years. The program places you at a school and through the Board Of Education you are helped to find a place to live, getting your license and a car and all the other necessities of living in a foreign country. The Board of Education also pays for your flight to Japan and your flight back to the country you departed from I recommend this program because they do help those who are teaching with all of those things as opposed to coming here on your own and having to do all those things on your own. This can be a very big pain in the butt especially if you don't know the language or the culture. There is a lot of red tape that you will have to go through and it is just the Japanese way so it's something you have to get use to. There is a very large network set up for those in the JET Program to make sure their living in Japan is as comfortable as possible. The qualifications for this program is a college or university degree and a desire to learn Japanese culture as well as share your own. There are many other programs such as NOVA, Teach Away, and AEON but I can only speak for the JET Program. Do research and you will find many available means to come and teach in Japan If you have any questions feel free to as me!
2 :
JET is the best deal. GEOS and AEON are much the same (they started out as the same company). NOVA is no more (they collapsed after "financial irregularities". They were s**t anyway.) ECC is probably better than GEOS or AEON language schools, judging by people I know who've worked for all three. Berlitz can be good if you get a contract with them (rather than on a per lesson rate). You can make more money with them than with the others, and the students tend to be better (fewer hobbyists, more people who need it for work). This site gives a comparison. Be aware that it's based on official information from the companies. GEOS's bonuses are not what the site says - they're frequently much, much less. http://www.all-about-teaching-english-in-japan.com/Geos.html Having housing provided for you sounds nice - but it does mean your accommodation is tied to your job.

I'm not sure about schools IN Japan, but I know many non-USA airlines send their pilot trainees to the US for their training, especially in the Southwest. I know JAL does this, and the airport I trained at had a bunch of Korean Air Lines trainees based there. We have better weather, less congested airpspace and the cost of operations is much, much less. I've even heard, anecdotally, that some Europeans have found that even as individuals, rather than learn at home, it's cheaper to come to the US, rent an apartment near an airport and live there for several months while they learn to fly, and then go home with a shiny new pilot's certificate.
2 :
I know that licenses from outside japan are not allowed if you are flying an aircraft licensed in japan. You must convert your license, and the US license is probably the easiest, since we have the highest set of standards. It costs about $40,000 to get a comercial license in the US, which is about 4,700,000 yen. I hope that helped.

How much money should I raise to spend in Japan.

How much money should I raise to spend in Japan.?
I am going on a school vacation to Japan for two weeks next summer. I need to raise over $3,000 just to go. How much extra money should I try to raise so I can spend money there as well. The $3000 does include everything (food, transportation, etc.) I am just wondering about spending money to buy souvenirs.

Well, If the $3,000 covers Hotels, and air fare, and food If ur going.... 1-2 weeks...$100-200(without food) 3-4 weeks...$300-500(without food) Be sure to think about trains and such as well.
2 :
It depends on what your $3000 covers. Does it already cover food? Does it cover accommodation? Anyway, if you don't need accommodation, you need $100 for each day. So you need to have $1400 for 2 weeks.

Do I have to go back to high school

Do I have to go back to high school?
Hi I plan to go to Japan to continue my education there. I currently am finishing university here in the Philippines and plan to go to Japan after I graduate. Problem is that I read that at least 12 years of primary and secondary education are required to attend university, I only have 10 since the Philippines doesn't have a junior high but has 4 years of high school. Question: does anyone know if I have to go back to high school in Japan to get into university?

Japanese colleges require nationwide testing and often want a high school diploma from a Japanese high school. And to get into a Japanese high school (without paying insane fees) usually reuires a test and a diploma from a Japanese middle school. If applying as an international student, you will probably get in, but the fee is going to be extremely high. And federal aid obviously won't be an option at that point. Your best bet is to do a study abroad in Japan; you will be paying the same price as if you were attending college at home. Go research some colleges and see if they have study abroad options in Japan.

Well, you are probably asking about this, because you are having a hard time finding information. What do you have so far? The knowledge I have about Japanese School life comes from Anime. I can tell you what I know. For the timings.... It depends, just like in America. Some school start earlier than others. For example some schools may start at 7:30 while others may start from 8:00 any where to 9:00 am. Entrance into the various Japanese Schools depends by a student s' grades and by difficult entrance exams. The more prestigious the schools the harder the test are. The test consists of different subjects the student is supposed to have learned in their various years of schooling. There are private and public schools. Classes are assigned by the student̢۪s grades as well. If you are the smartest of your class you are assigned to class 1-A, and so on and so forth. Classes range from 1-A, 1-B, 1-C, 1-D, to 1-F. The number also varies, if you are in 1-B for ex, your grades are okay and you are in 7th grade. If you are in 2-C your grades are satisfactory and your in 8th grade. 9th grade is 3; yes middle school starts in 6th and ends in 9th. A student is also ranked by their midterm and final grades. Ranking is important in Japan. Students usually take similar classes like the ones America students take. They take Japanese, Math, Science, History, they chose their electives. By the way English is Mandatory; all students are required to take this language. A typical school year for a student starts in winter and ends in spring. While here in America school starts in fall and ends in summer. Students also are required to use to different types of uniforms. Students use a different (warmer) uniform in the winter and a lighter uniform in the spring. Girl̢۪s uniforms usually include fine dresses; even in public schools girls use expensive uniforms. Uniforms vary greatly form school to school. Boys usually wear suits. In most schools Girls use dresses that resemble sailor outfits. School Activates resemble American after school activities. There are sports and student councils, newspaper clubs, art clubs; music clubs basically any club you can imagine. If you need any more info, I recommend watching school related anime. Though they are usually romantic comedy.

They have 3 semesters : The first term starts from April and finishes in July. Summer vacation starts from late July to end of Aug (it depends on the schools, but they usually have summer vacation for 1 month and 1 week or so. private school have longer vacation than public schools). The second term starts from September and finishes in late Dec (sometime around Christmas season), then they have winter break for about 2 weeks. The third term starts in the beginning of January till late March. They will have spring break for about 2 weeks.
2 :
School year starts in April in Japan. We have 3 semesters. Roughly, semester 1: April 7 to July 15 semester 2: September 1 to December 15 semester 3: January 7 to March 20
3 :
It depends each high, but mostly speakingk they have 3 semesters, not two. Either three or two semesters, School year starts April and ends March, usually. Some exception like Jan to Dec also exist there though. So you can not simplify it. In general, the posters advanced are correct anyway.
4 :
School here start in April and end in March of the following year. School year is usually divided into three terms. First Term: April - July Opening Ceremony (Shigyou shiki) April. This is a ceremony where students gather to mark the start of the new school year. End of Semester Ceremony (Shuugyou shiki) July This is a ceremony to declare the end of the first semester. Summer Holiday (Natsu Yasumi) End of July to End of August This is a long break of 30-40 days. Students may be able to join clubs and participate in special school activities. Second Term: September - December Shigyou shiki - (September.) this is a ceremony where students gather to mark the start of the second term. Shuugyou shiki (December) Winter Holiday (Fuyu yasumi) End of December to the beginning of January (relatively short holiday of about two weeks. Third Term: January to March Shigyou shiki (January) Graduation Ceremony (sotsugyou shiki) March - This is a cermony to congratulate students on their graduation from the final grade. End of the Year Ceremony (Shuuryou shiki) March.- this is a ceremony not only to declare the end of third semester, but also the end of the entire school year. Spring Holiday (Haru Yasumi) End of March - Beginning of April. Lot of activities for students during semesters but a lot of explanation is needed. And what do you mean by highschool? Junior highschool or Senior Highschool? After graduating elementary education, we enter junior highschool for 3 years, then, senior high school. And then universities (daigaku) or two-year colleges (tandai) or Vocational colleges (senmongakkou)

Well, I'm not sure about International school but my high school I'm attending which is in Tokyo, Kita-ku, has an international department and you can graduate there and get into high ranked universities. The problem is, I think if you are to graduate from a high school in Japan, you need to have at least 3 years of Japanese high school education in order to apply for a university (I have to do that even though my Japanese is fluent but I came from USA) I can give you the site if you are interested... 2 :
If you are interested in japanese culture, you should go to "Kyoto" and "Nara". because there are many famous temples, such as Horyu-ji temple and Yakushi-ji temple. If you want to have delicious japanese food, I strongly advise you to go to Osaka or Hokkaido.(Osaka is called "kuidaore no machi" meaning "a town where there are so many delicious food that you'll eat far too much.) In Osaka you can eat "tako-yaki", "okonomi-yaki"etc... In Hokkaido you will have delicious seafood. i think you'd better go to Osaka after you finished sightseeing in Kyoto and Nara, because Osaka is next to Kyoto and you can go to Osaka by train. hope this helps.
3 :
Kyoto Nara Osaka Kamakura Hokkaido
4 :
Kyoto, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Osaka, Sapporo....
5 :
lol at tkm (I think this person is also a native japanese). For me: Osaka Nara Kyoto Hiroshima Mt. Fuji Nagoya Himeji Nikko Kamakura Yokohama and that pretty much does it. I have not heard the best things about Hokkaido, and have never heard from a seasoned traveler that it is especially splendid. Mostly, japanese people are the ones who tell me how great it is, japanese people who have not seen a lot of the world tell me this, not other travelers. Same with Okinawa, there are better beaches in the world than in Japan, so i would rather not.
6 :
I would look for festivals. Every town has festivals unique to that town and they are like their own Forth of July. I was in Kofu during their festival day and there were like 15,000 people dressed up in Samurai garb reinacting the most famous battle the town had. It is something like the Civil War folks in the US who recreate battles. Definitely check out some of the big castles. In Kyoto you should see Nijo jo and then there are great castles in Nagoya and Himeji. Himeji is considered to be the best castle in the country.
7 :
You say you like Los Angeles, Miami, and Hollywood? If that's the type of place you like, outside of Tokyo perhaps you'd like Osaka and Fukuoka. Generally Kyoto is the second best place to go, but it is home to many of Japan's historical and cultural sites. Are you interested in that sort of thing? The cities you've mentioned are big on shopping and excess. Miami has famous beaches...
8 :
I luv going to japan! I have tons of relatives there so i go a lot! here are some fun things to see Kyoto-for beautiful temples and the occasional geisha! Hemeiji- to see hemeiji castle Nara- if u go here then u should see the deer park hope this helps!

First, to be technical I think what you mean is you want to study abroad. A foreign exchange student is someone who attends one school while someone from the school you attend attends your school. Study abroad is where you attend a university in a different country. Now about your question. I would meet with a study abroad advisor at your school. They should direct you to study abroad providers that offer programs in Japan for your major. These might cost more because it won't be directly through your school but I do not know for sure (all schools and providers are different). You can also try to directly enroll in a Japanese university (again, the study abroad office can help you with this). As for the credit thing, plan your schedule while abroad with your academic advisor once you find out which Japanese school you are going to. That will ensure that they approve of your schedule (your abroad classes fulfill a requirement at your school) and more importantly that you will get credit for the classes you take while abroad.

I am from Asia. From what I know, there are a big demand in english teacher in asia. It doesn't really matter which school you go. But you may want to take ESL certification. It will definitely help to get a teacher job overseas.
2 :
If you want to teach English in Japan then in general you'll need a degree (although there are still possibilities if you do not have this) and a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate to get a visa and work. The degree can be in almost any subject as it is usually required for the visa only so you will find teachers with a degree in Engineering or Sociology. Having said this, to help get the job it's obviously better to be English or language related, for example a degree in English literature. The TEFL certificate can be taken either in-house or online at your own pace which is a much cheaper option (see http://icalweb.com).

The benchmark teaching salary in Japan is 250,000 yen/month. Getting free rent takes you up to about that amount. Find out about cooking facilities you'll have. That can save you a decent amount of money vs. eating out. Of course if your kitchen is tiny it might not be practical. Check out my budget on the first link below then there are details of my time working for Interac on the second. All the best.

Why not. Pregnancy doesn't violate any other laws. They can attend the class. But usually the girls who get pregnant are dropouts and they don't go to school.

Anything as long as its from the U.S. The japs are always hungry 4 american products.

There's a wide variety of things, it depends what you're looking for: 1. Food/Drinks: many kinds of soda are very popular, as well as junk food. Japanese has McDonald's, Pizza Hut, Domino's, KFC and Subway, more recently Baskin Robbins and Burger King as well, but pretty much any other kind of junk food, ESPECIALLY cookies (oreos, chips ahoy) or candy bars (twix, 3 musketeers) would probably be appreciated. 2. Music: Rock is not that popular. Nowadays dance music, hip hop and pop are the way to go. And not adult contemporary, like Celine Dion, but more girly, like Mika or Justin Timberlake. 3. Movies: Anything, but you can find most mainstream movies in Japan already, so this wouldn't be too helpful. However, merchandise, like posters, photos or calenders might be nice. 4. TV: 24, Lost, Heroes and Prison Break are HUGE here. Similarly, the shows themselves are easy to acquire, but merchandise would be hard to come by. 5. Other: Disney is MASSIVE, especially with girls. Anything and i mean ANYTHING Disney related would be loved. Snoopy is also pretty big. 6. Clothing: Again, anything from mainstream brands (such as Calvin Klein or Gap or Abercrombie & Fitch) would be appreciated. Sports brands, such as Nike or Adidas, are also big.

Does Japan stay in school year round

Does Japan stay in school year round?
Why? Do they get out earlier in the long run? Are they smarter because of this?
Other - Education - 1 Answers

Well, I'm not that sure if it would be considered year round schooling (I'm actually not that sure what would be considered year round schooling to be honest.). Anyways, school is usually Monday-Friday. Also, on Saturdays, students attend half a day about two or three times a month. School begins in April (around the 1st). Summer vacation is from late July to the end of August. Winter vacation is from late December to early January while spring vacation is in March. They both last about 10 days each. School ends around March 31st of the next year. In other words, the don't get a break between each grade. Students in Japan are, I guess you could say, pressured into working harder for school. Most high schools (from what I know) make it where you do have to take exams to get into them. Japanese students also tend to have to learn more than the typical American student right off. While we're learning our ABCs, they're having to learn things like Kanji and Katakana along with Romaji. They learn all the different characters throughout the first few years of school. At least, I believe that would be right. I'm not completely sure thought due to not looking these things up for awhile. Oh, I guess I should mention that Japanese students graduate at the same age a typical American student would (from what I know anyways). Well, I hope that could at least help a little.

I'm looking for either a semester or summer exploration, and since I'm self taught in Japanese, many of the programs for semester wont accept me. I'm looking into Intrax, but so far thats the only one. Any sugestions?

I looked into intrax for study abroad, but i heard that they do not have a very good reputation for taking care of their students. If you are self taught in japanese, and fluent, you could talk to someone from the programs and see if they would consider accepting you.

That is what happens in a Socialist society. Everyone is equal and we are all to assume the lowest denominator. That makes it fair. No one excels, no one makes more money, no one gets better grades (what the heck, do like the US just graduate them, don't worry if they can read or not). It is Socialism plane and simple. It is taking hold in the US. Even at my age I will probably see the US go all the way. Take everything from everyone and redistribute the wealth. It sucks, but the first thing is to get them young and indoctrinate them into believing everything and everyone is exactly equal. That they are entitled to the same as everyone else whether they work for it or not. Bottom line, don't look for it to go away, look for it to grow...
2 :
huh? 'school girl' uniforms are used the world over by all school systems that use any type of uniforms.. including catholic schools in the US. Nobody wears uniforms because they think its 'cool'.. in fact, it's the school system attempting to make everyone more or less 'same' at least in terms of appearance.
3 :
You mean, like pop-stars dressing in uniform even though they clearly don't have to? It's probably meant to be alluring, kind of like the "naughty catholic school-girl" thing. In that sense, as long as school uniforms are in widespread use you will see it as a selling point in getting attention. Kind of like the "sexy librarian" thing. Anyway, Japan is a highly regimented society, last summer it was a big deal when Corporate Bigwigs tried to get people to wear cooler clothing in the summer heat. They love their suits!
4 :
I don't think school girl uniforms are cool. And not so many people in Japan think like that. Haven't you lived in Japan? It is happening only in anime and some TV shows. But I think many girls seem that they wanna try to wear the uniform once if they have a chance.
5 :
When the 40+ year old men grow up ?
6 :
When they grow up. They keep tninking school girls are virginal, but as you say, so outdated.
7 :
I teach at a Japanese high school and about 70-80% of students support the school uniform system. The most common given reason is "not having to choose what to wear in the morning." Japanese society is very much about fitting into a group and knowing one's standing in that group, so school uniforms are helpful for identifying one's school and grade. Many students wear their uniforms on the weekends and when traveling, even though they don't have to. Of course I'm sure there are some students who can't wait to change into other clothes when the bell rings, but they aren't the majority. So I don't know who thinks they have "stopping being cool" or who thinks "it's getting old," but it isn't Japanese students.
8 :
never. the japanese pornography industry exploits youthful images.
9 :
some may think it cool, some not. getting old is not too bad as too new.
10 :
Not everybody thinks they're cool. Some kids don't want to wear them. Some kids alter them. Elementary students don't wear them now, but that used to be the case in the past. As someone who never wore uniforms at school, I sometimes feel jealous of those who do or did. It looks fun sometimes. Then again, I'm a better person for not being a robot.

Has anybody heard of Mike Lyons English School in Gifu City Japan

Has anybody heard of Mike Lyons English School in Gifu City Japan?
I am looking into ESL teaching positions in Japan and came across this school and will be doing a telephone interview with them soon. I was wondering if anybody has heard of/been involved with this school and can give me some insight into what they're like. Anything is helpful. Thanks!

I used to live in Gifu City and I have never heard of it. It could be a new thing though. Here's how many English schools spring up: foreign man (who probably worked as an English teacher before) marries Japanese lady and they go into business together. She gets all her friends to send their kids there. How successful the school is depends largely in part on the personalities and business sense of the proprietors. Some people are cool, some people are jerks, it just depends. I'd ask them how long they have been in business, how many students they have total, how many employees they have, how big their school is (ie, is it just a rented room in an office building, or do they actually have their own building?) Do they have more than one location? Did they originate in Gifu? And at this point you are still in the US, so they would have to help you get a working visa. Where would you be living? Would they help you find housing? Be aware of the fact that renting an apt in Japan is quite complicated and expensive. . .you might have to pay 3 mos + as a deposit. How are they going to pay you, direct deposit or what? And of course there are the usual questions, what your schedule would be, how many days a week and hours a day you'd work, do they train you at all, when are your holidays, what is your salary. And so on. I don't think it is rude to ask all this if you just say, it's a big step for me and I am trying to find out as much as I can. I want to be prepared. . .if you preface your questions w statements like that I don't think they'd take offense, unless of course they had something to hide. . .! You should also search this company on gaijinpot.com

My friend who lives in Tokyo has similar school hours to those in the United States, except for one day a week has school until 5:30 or 6pm.
2 :
7AM-10PM
3 :
I believe it depends on the level of school you're talking about, and for junior and senior high school it also depends on whether or not you count after-school club activities. At my junior high school, the first class starts at 8:50 and classes end at 4:00. However, most kids arrive at school by 8:15, and they stay until about 6:30 for club activities. Some clubs might also have morning practice, and that can start very early (I think one of my teachers mentioned arriving around 6:00am to open the school for morning club activities). Many of the kids will also have juku (cram school) for a few hours in the evening.
4 :
Typically, it's between 8:30am to 2:30pm. But it depends on each school, of course. Some of the kids stay at the school later for their clubs. Colleges have longer hours.

It depends on what kind of flight school you mean, to be a pilot? or? In any case, I don't think you can "continue" your study in Japan. You have to start from the beginning of the course at a Japanese school.
3 :
If you find yourself in the West of Tokyo you can use the flight school on Yokota US airbase. http://www.yokotasupport.com/page.php?31 over and out.

1 :
I don't think so.Outside of an exchange program, I don't think you could go to a Japanese high school. Most high schools teach in Japanese only. There's no chance of renting an apartment at 17 in Japan. You need to be old enough to sign a contract. It isn't even easy for a 25 year old to rent a place in Japan. Many Japanese landlords won't rent to a non-Japanese.Those that do want 2 or 3 months rent in advance, plus another month or two rent for key money. You'd need a student visa to spend a year there. Sorry.
2 :
here is some info on an exchange program http://www.twoworldsunited.com/frequent_questions.html
3 :
You usually need working or student visa to live in Japan. For working visa, you have to get a job offer from a Japanese company. But you can't look for a job in Japan without a visa. So you need it before you enter Japan. For student visa, you have to be admitted to a Japanese college. You need to pay tuition and living cost for 4 years. It could be about $80,000. You can get a student visa if you are admitted to a high school in Japan (17 is the age to go to a high school in Japan). But it's very hard if you don't speak or read Japanese. And of course, you need $20,000-30,000 money to live in Japan for 1 year.

When I looked into exchange in Japan 7 years ago, I heard that few if any programs will accept you once you have graduated from high school (it may be a visa issue). It may be wiser to try to go in your junior year (if you are not doing it already). I did a summer abroad through AFS. Check their D.O.B. cut-off dates to see if you can do any of these programs after high school graduation. My 18th birthday was late August, so I made the cut-off by 20 days or so.

How about this university? http://www.geidai.ac.jp/english/film/animation.html The university is one of the most famous Japanese universities of art. Maybe you can look for more opportunities, as other universities/colleges may offer similar studies. I don't know what classes you have at school, but I would recommend you learn various types of subjects, not limiting to art or something, because I assume creating anime and manga will require a wide range of knowledge, which will help in taking a larger view. And if you come to Japan, learning Japanese language will also be important, as there are not so many English speakers there. I hope you will come here to Japan someday and your goal will be accomplished!

It's not as specific as that. Take a general English related degree anywhere to keep your options open. Take a TEFL Certificate to learn how to teach English. And then go to Japan. There is no one kind of degree specifically for teaching in Japan.

i'm a male and I have a problem hanging out with my friends/students in japan high school.

i'm a male and I have a problem hanging out with my friends/students in japan high school.?
i'm a foreign high school student. I live with my parents and I have been studying in Japan for 4 years, and lately I have a problem hanging out with my friends/making friends . I noticed that my old friends in school don't treat me the same way as before. I felt that they've changed after we all became 2nd yr high school students. One day, I tried to eat lunch with them, but they prefer eating lunch with their other friends. That day, I tried to hang out with them (including with their other friends) but it's just too hard for me to communicate with them. I had difficulty understanding the topic of their conversation (sports,etc...) . Sometimes, I want to enter in the middle of their conversation, but I feel ashame because maybe they will not understand my japanese. I don't know what to do....I mean, why? I was kind to them and I didn't show any bad style to them when were still 1st year students. But why is this happening? can anyone help me? I don't want to be alone in school.

Jerry Sometimes there is no real way of understanding High School Teen social problems. You have the option of asking your friends what is wrong and if you feel that they don't want to hang then find new friends...life is too short to worry about that...Im sure that there are other kids that would love to chill with you...but keep in mind that you cannot force your friends to want to hang with you...be polite and honest in your dealings with them (so they don't have a reason to not like you) but if they want space from you then give it to them. Don't be hurt Jerry, Im sure they arent trying to be mean...but the language thing could be alienating them or it could be that youre all growing apart...but you go to another group and make friends...whatever you do, do not sit by yourself and make it worse. You sound like a good kid, don't feel down about it... but if you make it worse by sitting by yourself and looking miserable, no one will eat lunch with you. Good luck Jerry and I hope it works out!

Well my friend lives in Japan and she just moved back there. She described highschool as very strict there, you have to be really smart and hard working. My friend was very smart here and she didn't make the top in her class because that's how smart they are. You have to really concentrate. Their uniforms are very strict too, nice but strict. They have P.E. mostly every day. You should wear inside slippers and school isn't so long each day. Well im sorry if this really isn't helpful enough, but I hoped I did in some way. Good luck!
5 :
High schools in Japan, both public and private, are classified according to academic levels of its pupils. We have a "ranking" of high schools so that parents and kids choose a high school to go. All classes are in Japanese so you cannot follow them without certain level of Japanese skill. They wear uniform. I think 90% of high schools in Japan has a uniform.
6 :
depends my friend went to very strict school had uniform even socks and shoes, she had to tie her hair and cant dye, no pierced earring, no part time job... etc etc etc had loooots of homework and pop quiz... im sure she doesnt want to go back... lol there are lots of high schools dont study much, easy, have no uniform. you need to check your high school is strict or not

Looking to go to Temple University Japan, any information about the school that anyone can share

Looking to go to Temple University Japan, any information about the school that anyone can share?
I am looking to go to college next year, I have always wished I could have gone to college when I finished high school, but the situation at the time didn't allow for it, now, 14 years later, I am in a position where I can persue that dream, I've often wished that I could experience life outside of the USA as well, and have always been amazed by Japanese culture, so with the tried and true, kill 2 birds with one stone method, I'm going to do my best to attend TUJ, I've never lived in a 'big' city before, only the burbs, I know enough Japanese now, thru self study to get myself in trouble, and am learning more every day. First semester from what I have read will have to be in the dorm, the bigger of the two is apparently a converted hotel. After the first semester, I can then live elsewhere, should I? any information about the experience would be great. Thanks in advance!

Living in Japan is a wonderful experience. I have been here almost 9 years now and love it. Although I'm not a student I have taken opportunity of all the Japanese culture classes offered in my area and have made many great friendships. I would suggest you live on campus until you become used to your 'new' environment and make some good friends. If after you become comfortable and want to experience 'Japanese life' off campus, go for it! You have to be financially able to pay rent, be able to actually rent a place and so on. Check out this site about living in Japan, hope this helps! http://thejapanfaq.cjb.net/ Good luck and I hope you love Japan as much as I do!(*^o^*)

do kids grades actually get displayed at schools in japan

do kids grades actually get displayed at schools in japan?
you know in manga kids always see who got best on the tests and stuff, so, do kids grades actually get displayed at schools in japan?
Japan - 8 Answers

1 :
No. Manga is fake and is added to help with the plot somehow. That would cause problems don't you think? Maybe they post things like who made it on a certain team or what not. Not grades. Of course for my school they post grades..but is kept secret by ID number. Not your actual name.
2 :
"Welcome! To answer your stupid question, it depends on each school. And don't mix up reality with manga, because manga is stupid" will be some of the answers that follow mine, I bet. I as an average citizen of Japan find little problem with displaying students' grades(with their names) as long as they've done a pretty good job. There are many schools that publicize who're the top graders after midterm n' stuff. And the top graders of 'moshi' are published. That of course doesn't apply to those who did mildly good or sucked shite however, so if there's anyone planning to go to school in Japan who's worried about your grade being seen by others and your friends finding you retarded, that's not necessary.
3 :
The only time I have seen grades posted was when my daughter applied to a private school. Then the scores were posted. Other than that, you really, and I mean REALLY, need to get a clue that manga and anime are NOT real. They are freaking cartoons. This means that not only does Superman not fly, he doesn't freaking exist. I knew that even when I was reading the comic books as a kid. What is the world would lead you to believe that manga and anime are a true reflection of a culture? Grow up. Get a life. Stay away from manga/anime. Do SOMETHING to get a clue.
4 :
only answering for 2 points :D
5 :
No, manga is a comic book, they have little to do with the real world.
6 :
doesn't matter what grade they get anyways, the students can still move on to the next grade even after failing all the classes. but i have never seen a teacher display grades in a class. Manga, anime, it is all a story, fake. don't base your ideas off of a book or a cartoon on tv. if that were true then most japanese would say that americans eat pizza and hamburgers and fries and drink coke everyday for breakfast lunch and dinner.
7 :
FYI, "displayed" has many degrees of display. In some cases, grade information is distributed to students by paper, not displayed on a wall. In some cases, they will only tell you which place (like 10th out of 40 kids) you are at. When I was in high school, grade information was distributed by papers. But after some students said to school they do not like it, it was cancelled. So the bottom line is, it depends on each school. But I'm sure there are few schools where grade is displayed on a wall as you saw in manga.
8 :
Like everyone else has said - I have never seen the grades displayed - test or final. I know my students get told their grades at meetings with their homeroom teacher and parent. The practice tests for the high school entrance exams get sent home in a book, with the average for each subject. The parents are supposed to stamp it with their name stamp and give it back to the school. Not that it matters what their grades are since they will pass regardless. Some of the high schools in my area do look at grades, but not as much as they look at what the students make on the entrance exams. And really, some of the grades are so randomly assigned it doesn't matter. It's like "sure, this kid has great tests scores, but never turned in homework. Let's just give him the top grade because."

First off, learn Japanese. 2nd of all, look/search for information on College Entrance Exams in Japan.
2 :
And how do you plan on moving there if it's not on a student or work visa ? You need a BA degree to work there. You need about $80,000 to go to college there. You just can't go there and say here I am.When you arrive at the airport you will be fingerprinted and have your photo taken. They will ask you the purpose of being there. If you have no reason, they won't allow you out of the airport.
3 :
As another says, you can't move to Japan without going to school or working. It means, you MUST know how you can go to school or work before you move to Japan. To answer your question, you have to take and pass entrance exams as most schools after high school level in Japan have exams.

Notable difference I will point out: - Most schools host lunch time in their home rooms - Teachers rarely discipline bad behavior effectively - Most students take bus or train or obviously they walk, if they live within walking distance, I have never seen anyone dropped off at school, unless its a international school. - Sometimes you'll find teachers don't have teaching rooms they always teach in, they are prone to travel to different classes. - Extracurricular activities are just a must, everyone does them - After school hours you'll often see groups of school kids jogging around the street, especially in chiyoda ku, tokyo - Middle High school is more strict than high school - Girls in high school normally roll their skirts up, and boys unbutton their shirts - Schools in tokyo, don't know if anywhere else: Supply free milk lol. - Some schools don't have outdoor playing grounds, in break time, they just hang out in classes and hallways - SLeeping in class is very popular

Japanese school has a month-long summer break, a New Year's break, and since their school year ends in March and starts in April; a short Spring break. The school day usually lasts from 8:30-3:00, but they have numerous days when students go home early. I do think that there is still a half day of school on Saturday; mothers got upset when they last tried to change this-they didn't want their kids to be at home since it was time with their spouse. Schools require students to participate in some type of "club" activities- sports or other interest groups. This takes place before and after school and often on weekends. It would be rare to be driven to school, most students walk or take the train and/or bus. Students must take exams for junior and senior high. If you want to go to a good school, you must test well to be admitted. Students also wear uniforms, which are also required to attend away from school events. Each school's uniform is unique and there used to be a kind of inspection each day to make sure you are wearing all required parts of the uniform. If your name tag or neck wear was missing, you received a demerit. Too many demerits and you would be disciplined by suspension or expulsion. Most school buildings look alike: cream stucco 2-3 story buildings with an adjoining packed-dirt area for practicing sports. Since space is limited in Japan, they try to use the entire land area for some purpose, so no ornamental grass! Almost all schools have at least one cherry tree, which usually blooms around the change of the school year and appears in graduation photos. Because the blossoms are so beautiful, but fall quickly, they evoke bittersweet memories of moving on to the next step and leaving friends behind.

The Japanese school year is from April to March with three main breaks during the school year. Summer Vacation is approx 5-6 weeks long in late July and August. Winter Vacation is 2 weeks long in late December and early January and Spring Vacation is 1 week long in late March. Classes are usually either 45 minutes long or 50 minutes long depending on which schedule the school uses for the day. There are usually 5-6 classes a day at school. Classes typically start after morning homeroom at around 8:30 am and the last class is usually around 3:30 or 4 pm. A lot of kids have club activities and these will take place before school early in the morning from 6:30 am - 7:30 am and after school from 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm. There used to be school on Saturdays when I first started teaching 10 years ago but this stopped several years ago. The students are sometimes required to attend school on a Saturday for an Open Day, Lesson Observation Day or Sports Day, but this is rare and only about 3 times a year. Most students at my school either walk to school or ride their bicycle. The interesting things about middle school in Japan for me is they have a prepared school lunch and they eat lunch in their home room with the home room teacher. They are not allowed to bring food to school like students in Australia. They also have 20 minutes of Cleaning time a day where all the students and teachers clean the whole school.

LIke how long per year are classes? > 7-8 hours in a normal school day. can extend up to 9-10 hours during busy days. How many breaks are there and is it true there is school on saturdays? > we have a 1 hour lunch break. yes, in our school we have a 3 hour class during saturdays. and a sport training during the afternoons if you have one. And do most students walk to school, take the bus, or driven? > I ride a train from the house, then walk from the station. Others: >I studied in a public middle school and private high school. >I guess we had a more "strict" training and education from other high schools. Our school is living to it's reputation of all students making it to big universities such as Keio and Todai. >In our school, boys and girls are separated. >Extra curricular is a must only in middle school and not in high school. >Foods served by the school often DOES NOT taste good. >Vending machines are always a substitute to the school food. Or your packed lunch if you have one. >We are not allowed to go to movie houses, play billiards, go to bar while wearing our uniform. >middle school is MORE FUN than high school LoL (^o^;)
